Dryers are a vital part of most industrial manufacturing operations. They allow for the drying of finished products which may be a wide range of things such as grain, complete parts, pharmaceuticals and food. The drying process is a complex one that involves heat and mass transfer, as well as chemical and physical reactions.

The dryers are designed to accommodate the type of material being dried, and there are a large number of different models available. The selection of the right type of dryer depends on a number of factors, including how the feed is handled, the temperature to be used, and whether a continuous or batch style operation is required. Conductive and convective heat transfer are the two primary types of heating employed in the drying of materials. Convective heating involves a circulating air stream that blows on the material being dried, and moisture is transferred by diffusion from the material to the air stream. Other forms of heat transfer such as gas radiation, and conduction from the hot surfaces supporting or confining the material may also be utilized in a dryer design.

A traditional dryer uses a drum that is rotated by an electric motor to tumble the material being dried. The motion of the drum creates an air flow that circulates around the materials being processed, allowing for heat to be transferred from the material to the heated air. Lint is removed from the airflow by a lint filter, and it is important that the dryer be properly vented to the outside, as a failure to do so can trap lint inside the system, and pose a fire hazard. dryers
