If you have a full day to explore Nusa Penida, it’s best to start your tour early at the popular attractions on the west side. This will help you avoid the crowds.
The first stop will be Angel’s Billabong and Broken Beach. This unique spot features a circular beach with leftover rock arches.
1. Angel’s Billabong & Broken Beach
A visit to Nusa Penida wouldn’t be complete without exploring Angel’s Billabong and Broken Beach. Located on the southwestern end of the island, these stunning rock formations are sure to stun you.
Although swimming is not allowed near the archway (even during low tide) daredevil tourists will ignore this and swim right up close to the edge. Keep in mind, that even a small mistake can lead to a tragic accident here.
This is one of the reasons why renting a motorbike or scooter is your best option for exploring Nusa Penida. The roads here are notoriously bumpy and dangerous. You won’t get very far if you try to walk here!
2. Penida
After a quick stop at Broken Beach, the next place to visit is one of Nusa Penida’s most iconic sights: Kelingking Beach. This cove is home to an enchanting landscape that has made it one of the most popular beaches in all of Indonesia.
Once you arrive, it’s time to start climbing the staircase built into the cliff side walls down to the beach itself. Along the way, you can see the Instagram-famous tree houses if they are open for that day.
Be sure to bring snorkeling gear if you plan on visiting any of the coastal areas! It is also a good idea to wear water shoes.
3. Kelingking Beach
A trip to Kelingking Beach is almost a right of passage on any nusa penida tour It’s a small but beautiful beach, completely encircled by huge rock walls. It feels secluded and is often visited by more locals than tourists.
Most people visit the viewpoint for a picture but then skip the hike down to the beach. It’s a great workout and scary but so worth it!
It’s also one of the best places to see Bali starlings and the other endangered birds on the island. You might even spot a snake, including pythons and vipers! If you are lucky, there may be manta rays around too. It’s a truly special place.
4. Batu Molenteng Tree House
Not only a photo spot, but also a place to stay, the Batu Molenteng Tree House offers something different when it comes to Nusa Penida. This unique treehouse is a great place to watch the sunrise and can even be rented for those interested in staying in this beautiful location.
The treehouse itself is positioned directly over Atuh Beach, giving visitors an amazing view of the natural scenery here. This makes this a popular and instagramable tourist attraction that is sure to blow your mind. This is a must-see if you’re visiting the island.
5. Tukad Cepung Waterfall
The Tukad Cepung Waterfall is a waterfall that flows into a cave. It is a very beautiful spot to explore and enjoy the view.
It is recommended to get there early in the morning. This way, you can beat the crowds and take some great photos.
When you arrive at the parking area, you will be required to buy a ticket for 15K IDR per person. You will then start walking down what seems like hundreds of steps and wade (ankle deep) through the river. Make sure to put on your swimwear beforehand as you will definitely get wet! There is also a second waterfall that you can visit if you wish.
6. Lempuyang Temple
A popular Instagram spot, the lower temple complex is overrun with tourists posing for photos. For a more peaceful experience, visit Tirta Gangga Water Palace instead. This beautiful garden features a pond full of koi fish and is surrounded by mountain scenery.
Another amazing sight on Nusa Penida is the Rumah Pohon tree houses. These tiny houses built into the trees offer incredible views of Diamond Beach below. It is possible to stay in one of the tree houses if you plan ahead, but they book out months in advance.
For the best view, come to Lempuyang at sunrise or sunset. This is when Mount Agung isn’t hidden in clouds and provides the most atmospheric pictures.
7. Tirta Gangga Water Palace
If you can’t make it to Kelingking Beach, this secluded spot is just a short drive away and a great alternative. It’s not as well-known, so you can expect to have the entire pristine cliff and sandy beach to yourself!
Located in Karangasem, Tirta Gangga Water Palace is a former royal palace built in 1948. The name translates to ‘blessed water’, which makes sense since the water here is believed to have healing powers. It’s also used for traditional ceremonies and rituals. It’s worth a visit for the beautiful gardens, ponds, and fountains. You can also take a dip in the sacred pools. The entrance is free. There is a small fee for parking.
8. Atuh Beach
If you’re traveling with family or friends then hiring a private car with driver is an ideal way to go around Nusa Penida. You can book this online via a number of sites like Baliferry, Gilitickets, or Directferries.
You can also hire a scooter or motorbike in Nusa Penida, though be sure to check the weather and road conditions before heading out. You’ll want to get to your destinations as quickly and safely as possible.
