Michael Kors is a name synonymous with all-American luxury and sleek sophistication, and the American designer’s collections perfectly bridge the gap between casual chic and true high fashion. The brand, founded in 1981, first became known for the jet-set aesthetics of its designs and innate sense of refined glamour, and Kors’ collection has since grown to include shoes, accessories, watches, fragrances and men’s and women’s ready-to-wear. The label has long been a favorite of celebrity VIPs, including Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Lopez and Charlize Theron, and Kors’ effortless chic look has become a must-have for fashionable women around the world.
However, like other high-end brands with a similar image, the company has struggled to overcome its overexposure, and as a result, the brand is experiencing some serious issues. During the first quarter of this year, Kors’ same-store sales dropped by 7.4 percent, which was steeper than Retail Metrics’ forecast for a 4.2 percent decline. Kors blamed the drop on declining traffic at department stores and an overabundance of discounts, and the brand has started to pull back on its wholesale shipments to department stores.
The discounting of the brand hasn’t been helped by the fact that Kors has multiple lines with varying price points, each competing for a portion of the market share. As a result, discount-outlet MMK bags can make the higher-end MK Collection bags appear inexpensive and cannibalize their sales. And the company has been struggling to get consumers to move up the price ladder as a result.
Kors’ ubiquity also seems to have inspired the creativity of the internet, as well. The brand has often been the victim of trolls, most recently after a user on TikTok posted a picture of their $358 Manhattan Satchel as a “treat” for their girlfriend. While I’m not one to judge people’s spending habits, it is hard to believe that a brand that was once seen as the epitome of modern elegance has now been tarnished by trolls.
The good news is, the brand’s semi-annual sale is currently underway and offers some major markdowns on bags of all styles and colors. There’s even a selection of wallets and wristlets to add to your bag collection, but be sure to shop fast as some items have already sold out.
