Human history in the region around Hattingen goes back to the Neolithic period, as archaeological findings show. During this time, the area was used as a pathway between Steinfurt and the bays of Cologne. In the Middle Ages, a small village grew up on the hillside above the river ford of the Ruhr. In 1486, the town gained its municipal law with the privileges of hosting weekly markets and fairs. The merchants, especially the drapers, made a name for themselves even in distant regions.

In the 17th century, the Protestant Reformation reached Hattingen. The towns of Niederwenigern and Blankenstein remained catholic communities. The city of Hattingen, however, separated from the church and monastery Deutz – thus becoming a secular community.

With the industrial era, heavy industry became the main economic driving force in the area. Mining and the smelting of iron ore contributed to the economic growth. The cities of Hattingen and Welper were shaped by the so called Henrichshutte. In 1853, Count Henrich zu Stolberg-Wernigerode bought 76 Morgens of land from the Bruch Manor in Welper. The steel mill was to become the center of regional economy for the next 130 years.

Today, Hattingen is a diverse city full of museums. The “Westfalisches Industriemuseum Henrichshutte” and the “Westfalisches Feuerwehrmuseum” are especially popular with visitors.
